The Golden Feast of the Purple Yam

The Golden Feast of the Purple Yam

The Golden Feast of the Purple Yam

Underneath the thatched pavilions of the datu’s seaside palace, the air hung thick with the aroma of roasting wild boar and caramelised coconut. The royal cooking competition was a sea of dazzling colour: vibrant scarlet sashes, patterned patadyong skirts, and the gleaming gold jewellery of the royal judges sitting at the wooden tables.

Amidst the grand chefs tossing rich spices into bubbling clay pots stood young Tino. While others cooked with rare delicacies, Tino held only a basket of earth-covered, humble purple yams. When it was his turn, he mashed the vibrant, deep-violet ube with sweet nipa palm sugar and creamy coconut milk. The judges gasped as he presented a dish glowing with an enchanting, rich purple hue—a vivid masterpiece born from the very soil of the Visayas, sweeter than any royal feast.
